“Thought long and hard regarding what to write but there won’t be any words that will perform justice,” Beth Mead said on Instagram and Twitter. June Mead supported her profession as her daughter developed into one of the top players in the women’s game. Mead had a significant role in the England team’s Euro victory and was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2022.
“At one in the morning on January 7, our lovely, compassionate, and hilarious mother and wife lost their heroic and protracted fight with ovarian cancer. You would have lived forever if love could have saved you. Although I’m sorry you’re gone, I appreciate the time we spent together more.
“Some privacy would be appreciated during this trying time for our family. We adore you greatly, always and forever. RIP, Mom.”
In addition to the tribute, Mead shared several photos of her mother, some of which showed her cheering on the Lioness at the 2017 European Championship when England won after defeating Germany in the championship game at Wembley.
The 27-year-old Mead has been acknowledged for her accomplishments on the field even if her season has been shortened due to an ACL injury.
She was named the BBC Sportsperson of the Year in December, received an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list, and was nominated for the Best FIFA Women’s Player award thanks to her accomplishments.
