Elon Musk volunteered to eat food produced in nuclear reactors on a live broadcast to prove it’s safe, as part of a campaign to persuade European governments to boost nuclear energy production in the wake of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, which has resulted in a gas crisis.
According to the firm SolarCity and the Japanese media outlet Asahi Shimbun, Musk visited Fukushima in July 2011, however it is unclear whether he ate locally farmed food as he claimed.
The Energy Information Administration states that America only imported about 8% of its oil and refined products from Russia last year, or roughly 672,000 barrels per day.
The United States, on the other hand, imported 51% of its liquid oil from Canada and 8.5 percent from Mexico. Saudi Arabia and smaller nations in Latin America and West Africa provide more oil to the United States than Russia, Daily Mail reported.
Musk claims nuclear energy in Europe will end dependency with Russia
However, the effects of a drop in Russian oil are still being felt in the United States, as AAA announced on Sunday that the national average for a gallon of gas has risen to $4.009, the highest level since 2008. According to GasBuddy, the average price was $4.10 a gallon on Monday.
According to Energy Intelligence, Russian oil exports have dropped by one-third, or around 2.5 million barrels per day, as a result of broad Western sanctions. General hesitation among purchasers to risk buying Russian cargoes, Energy Intelligence observed, despite the restrictions not being particular to Russian oil and gas.
Nuclear energy has long been a subject of debate in Europe, but in October, France led a group of eleven EU countries in calling for the alternative energy source to be called “green” as the continent attempts to wean itself off fossil fuels without destroying its economy.
As oil prices continued to rise to near-record levels during the continuing invasion of Ukraine, Elon Musk said that nuclear energy is the answer to breaking Europe’s dependency on Russian oil.
According to NY Post, the rising price of crude oil, aggravated by President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, has renewed discussion about Western energy dependency on Russian supplies. On Monday, oil prices soared to their highest level in almost a decade as the Biden administration considers a possible ban on Russian imports.
