What happened to Hamlin?
24-year-old safety Hamlin tackled Bengals receiver Tee Higgins in the opening period of the Jan. 2 game in Cincinnati, knocking him to the ground. After the tackle, Hamlin got to his feet, took two steps, and fell to the ground. Higgins was unharmed.
On the field, CPR resuscitated Hamlin’s heartbeat after he suffered a cardiac arrest. Then, he was brought to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition.
The game was indefinitely postponed after roughly an hour due to contradictory reports regarding when play may resume.
Instead of scores and highlights, fans relied on the game’s announcer, ESPN, for information on a terrible injury. Joe Buck called the game’s play-by-play and remarked, “It was a nightmare. “There is no way anyone could have anticipated it. Everyone is eager to witness this match after all the buzz and buildup, but everything has changed in the blink of an eye. Simply put, football is out the window.
How is Hamlin’s health condition now?
Before being completely discharged on Wednesday, Hamlin was moved from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center’s intensive care unit to the Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute on Monday. The Bills said Hamlin was freed following a thorough medical examination on Tuesday that included cardiac, neurological, and vascular testing.
Jamie Nadler, the doctor in charge of Hamlin’s care at Buffalo General Medical Center, stated, “We have finished several tests and evaluations. We are optimistic that Damar can be successfully released to continue his recovery at home alongside the Bills after consulting with the team doctors.
Hamlin was reportedly upgraded from a critical condition on Monday morning by doctors in Cincinnati. He also satisfied several other criteria for evacuation, such as no longer requiring intensive nursing home care or intensive oxygen therapy.
Why did the cardiac arrest occur?
The cause of Hamlin’s heart-stopping is yet unknown. But cardiac specialists claimed that the impact on his chest might have caused an arrhythmia in his heart. It takes only a few moments to cause that rare harm; the heart must be relaxed when the chest is impacted.
After having his breathing tube withdrawn on Friday, Hamlin began to walk with assistance. He observed the victory of the Buffalo Bills over the New England Patriots on Sunday. When the Bills returned the game’s opening kickoff for a score, Hamlin eagerly hopped up and down in reaction, setting off what the doctors jokingly claimed was “every alarm in the I.C.U.”
According to Dr. Timothy Pritts, a trauma surgeon who was a part of Hamlin’s care team at U.C.M.C., recovery from a life-threatening episode like the one Hamlin experienced typically takes weeks to months. Hamlin’s recovery has been a little bit faster than anticipated at each step, according to Dr. Pritts, who stated that he was on “a very normal to even accelerated” trajectory.
As Hamlin regains his strength and continues to recuperate after being intubated for three days, his physicians say he will need various types of rehabilitation and care from specialists. They indicated that discussing whether Hamlin could play football again would be “considerably into the future.” They declined to speculate on how far away he is from returning to his usual life.
