Isolated severe storms possible Friday near Alabama coast

Friday’s weather in Alabama will mainly be about rain, with the possibility of a few strong to severe storms near the coast. The Storm Prediction Center has noted a Level 1 risk for severe weather along the Alabama and northwest Florida coasts, including Mobile and Baldwin counties. This means isolated severe storms could occur.

The National Weather Service in Mobile mentioned the chance of wind gusts up to 40 mph and hail near the coast. Rain and storms will become more widespread in south Alabama as a low-pressure system approaches. Strong storms may form near the coast from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., moving west to east.

Additionally, there’s a high risk of rip currents along the beaches and rough surf with 3 to 5 feet waves. While a few thunderstorms are possible in south and parts of central Alabama, severe storms are not expected. Rain will persist today as the low-pressure system crosses the state, possibly lingering into Saturday morning with rainfall amounts varying from light to around an inch.
