In a teaser trailer shown during the NieR: Automata 5th anniversary live stream on Wednesday, Feb. 23, Aniplex announced that the NieR: Automata action role-playing game developed by Square Enix and Platinum Games will be the inspiration for a television anime.
NieR: Automata’s Game Story
According to Anime News Network, the story of androids 2B, 9S, and A2 as they fight to restore the machine-driven dystopia overrun by mighty machines is told in NieR:Automata.
In a plot shared by NieR Wiki Fandom, 2B is dispatched to the Factory, accompanied by 9S, to eliminate their objective. After navigating the complex and being attacked multiple times by Goliath wheels, 2B exits without having discovered her target. 9S reminds her that there is another facility across the bridge, but that it is unusual for a command to misplace a target. As she is attacked by Goliath, 2B informs him that they were not mistaken.
Goliath slams 9S off his flight unit when he joins the fight. When Goliath is defeated, 2B climbs to the top of him, where she discovers a gravely wounded 9S. He begs 2B to let him continue the mission and destroy the target on his own. 2B reluctantly agrees to defeat Goliath with his aircraft unit.
Following the destruction of the target, 2B and 9S regroup, only to be attacked by three more Goliaths. In order to destroy the Goliaths, 2B and 9S are compelled to detonate their black boxes, but their fates are unclear.
Each chapter has a number of sub-chapters, some of which are revealed only after several playthroughs. They can also be played back using the Chapter Select menu.
The 14th Machine War unfolds from the perspectives of three main characters: 2B, 9S, and A2, all of whom fight as the final survivors of human civilization against alien invaders. The conflict, however, is not so black-and-white, as the androids begin to question their own motivations and the environment in which they live when they are thrust into uncomfortable situations and moral quandaries.
