New York has committed $10 grant funding to organizations that support Asian American communities that have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office, the funding will be New York State’s most significant investment in the Asian American community in history.

Asian Americans have faced discrimination and violence in their communities across the country since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding arrives at a critical juncture for organizations such as the Asian American Federation (AAF), which has served as a safety net for many throughout the pandemic.
People aren’t leaving their homes, there’s a lot of anxiety, and they’re just on edge all the time, according to Jo-Ann Yoo, executive director of the Asian American Federation. AAF is one of several organizations that will receive and distribute the funds, ABC News reported.
Jo-Ann Yoo shared that this is massive news because no one has ever invested this much money in our community before. Instead, the governor has listened to the community and wishes to assist in constructing infrastructure since their community requires it.
The AAF will accept $6.8 million in funding to strengthen community support provided by a network of organizations that have seen a surge in demand for services due to the COVID-19 pandemic.AAF will also direct funding to 59 different community organizations that provide direct services, case management, and mental health support that serve Asian New Yorkers throughout the state.
According to Changing America, the CACF will receive more than $1 million to improve youth and young adult services aimed at Asian American communities, emphasizing social-emotional development and mental health. In addition, nearly $700,000 will be awarded to the CPC to support community services and programs that improve the social determinants of health for children, youth, students, families, and seniors.
The New York State Assembly is also guiding $1.4 million in legislative aid to another 40 organizations that support a wide range of Asian American communities across the state.
