There is a plethora of “Star Wars” videogames in the wild and 2003’s “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” has been deemed by many fans and gamers alike as one of the best titles of all time. Videogame developer and publisher Aspyr revealed last year that they’re developing a remake of “KOTOR” as it is slated to be a timed exclusive for PlayStation 5. Despite being mum on the said project, talks are going around that the game maker is making some significant changes in the remake.
‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s no longer turn-based?
The YouTuber MrMattyPlays was among the first to have heard such an update. According to him, it may well seem that the “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” reboot will be abandoning its turn-based combat style from the original title, as it will be replaced by a real-time action combat system similar to “Nioh” and “God of War,” ComicBook noted.
As of writing, Aspyr has yet to confirm such a rumor. However, there was a recent job listing on the developer’s official website that may well seem to confirm such speculation.
‘KOTOR’ devs’ job listing
Per Aspyr’s listing, they’re on the lookout for a “Combat Designer” as one of its essential functions is to “collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to prototype, build, and iterate on combat.” It did not indicate, however, what game it’s intended for.
To that end, there’s a lot of role-playing games have somewhat veered away from the turn-based play style in recent years. A notable example is Square Enix’s “Final Fantasy VII Remake” which was released in 2020.
Further, MrMattyPlays highlighted that the new “KOTOR” game will be showcasing various game modes. Nonetheless, no additional information was disclosed by the YouTuber’s source.
It is without a doubt that such an update in the new “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” will be a huge undertaking for Aspyre, not to mention the amount of pressure on them if it comes to fruition. In the meantime, “KOTOR” fans should be chewing on this with some pinches of salt.
