MMA Fighter Iuri Lapicus is killed in a motorcycle accident
A mixed martial arts athlete named Iuri Lapicus died Monday in Italy following a motorcycle accident. 27 was Lapicus’ age. He most recently competed in August 2022 when competing for the ONE Championship.
The promotion released a statement to ESPN: “The ONE Championship staff is grieved over the untimely demise of Iuri Lapicus. “At this awful time, our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.”
On March 17, Lapicus was involved in a motorcycle accident in Milan, according to Milano Today. According to reports, he crashed his motorcycle and came to rest. Soon after the accident, paramedics arrived, and a chopper took him to a hospital in Niguarda.
Before passing away on Monday, he spent three days in a coma.
The fighter, who had a 14-2 record, took on Eddie Alvarez, the former lightweight champion of the UFC, for the ONE 185-pound Championship in 2021. After Lapicus accidentally hit Alvarez in the back of the head, the fight was declared a no-contest. Lapicus last competed in August 2022, losing to Zebaztian Kadestam. His first 14 MMA fights were victories.
Lapicus was an Italian citizen by naturalization despite being a Moldovan native. Lapicus stated in a 2019 interview with 4once that he began studying judo at 9 in Moldova. Moldavia was a developing nation then, and because we had the appropriate structures, such as tatami, we trained on the parquet.

The 27-year-old man from Moldova passed away on March 20 after a motorcycle crash in Italy. Lapicus wrestled for ONE Championship, which released a statement shortly following his passing reflecting on his legacy.
The ONE Championship team released a statement on March 20 that read, “The untimely demise of Iuri Lapicus saddens the team. “At this awful time, our prayers and thoughts are with his loved ones.”
Lapicus was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Milan on March 17 after colliding with another car, according to Milano Today. The athlete never recovered consciousness and died while still in a coma.
Lapicus went to Italy when he was 15 and has lived there ever since, according to his biography on the One Championship website. He started his judo training there when he was nine years old.
Lapicus competed in his final match against Zebaztian Kadestam in August 2022 after establishing his pro mixed martial arts debut in 2014. Since then, the athlete has amassed a stellar professional record.
Lapicus, according to the ONE Championship website, has big plans for the future of his profession.
Lapicus has only ever competed in local Italian promotions up to this point, according to the fighter’s bio. But, he is now thrilled and ecstatic for the chance to finally showcase his abilities to ONE’s international audience.
In his most recent Instagram post, Lapicus also made mention of his professional background. On January 16, he posted a picture of himself entering an arena and captioned it, “Every minute is a new beginning.”
