John Grismore, a 49-year-old Grismore, defeated two write-in candidates to win the position of Franklin County sheriff in December 2022. With this victory, John could hold office in the same organisation that later let him go as a captain.

Grismore asserted that they are unaware of investigations into prisoner beatings or money transaction allegations. According to the former, he said, his actions were appropriate under the circumstances.

In October, Grismore was accused of simple assault after it was claimed by the authorities that he kicked a prisoner in shackles in a surveillance film. His defence was not guilty. The case is still open.

Later on, he remarked, “I aim to investigate ways to expand our police services throughout the county, continue the fantastic work already started on discovering innovative and money-saving technology, continue the creation and deployment of the Crisis Response Team, and train and retain current people while attracting fresh talent to the team, to name a few.”

The November election: Did Grismore prevail?

The county’s Republican and Democratic parties backed a write-in candidate after the conversation with the prisoner was captured on camera and made public. However, Grismore still easily won the November election.

On August 7, surveillance footage captured the prisoner being kicked. Grismore secured the Republican and Democratic nominations for Franklin County in Vermont’s August 9 primary, putting his name on the ballot for sheriff in November.

Outgoing Franklin County Sheriff Roger Langevin first suspended him after the video became widely known and dismissed him.
