A priceless jewel that belonged to Princess Diana is now in possession of Kim Kardashian.

The “Kardashians” actor paid $197,453 for the amethyst and diamond Attallah Cross belonging to the Princess of Wales, Sotheby’s London said on Jan. 18. Diana wore the item on October 27, 1987, when she went to a charity event in London.

“Such a procedure was used. I lay the dress on the red carpet’s underside before entering in my robe and pyjamas and ascending the stairs. I probably wore it for three to four minutes before changing right at the top of the stairs,” Kardashian said in a June 2022 interview with Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb for TODAY.

She praised Monroe and her decision to use it for the “Gilded Glamour” theme, saying, “I admire her.” Since the subject was “American,” I reasoned, what could be more American than Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy Birthday” to the President of the United States?” “I appreciate how much this garment means to American history.”

Diana donned a purple velvet Catherine Walker gown for the event, and a pearl necklace hung from which the cross was suspended. There were four bidders vying for the cross, which Kardashian won “for more than double its pre-auction estimate,” according to Sotheby’s London.

Garrard, who was good friends with the late monarch, designed the Attallah cross in the 1920s. Garrard also created Diana’s well-known sapphire engagement ring, which is now worn by Kate Middleton, the new Princess of Wales.

Over a period of years, Diana wore the cross on numerous occasions. The Princess exclusively wore the cross, and after her death, it was never again seen in public until now, the auction company claims.

According to Sotheby’s London, “the cross measures roughly 136 x 95mm and has a total diamond weight of around 5.25 carats.”

Kate and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, have worn their late mother-in-jewels law’s over the years. Most recently, on December 6, the former Meghan Markle attended the 2022 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Gala while sporting the emerald-cut, aquamarine solitaire ring she wore on her wedding day.

Kate wore the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara on November 22 for King Charles III’s inaugural state supper, which was hosted at Buckingham Palace.

Following her appearance at the 2022 Met Gala in Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday” dress, Kardashian made a significant purchase. When the founder of Skims appeared wearing the recognisable 1962 dress, headlines were made, and many people had conflicting feelings.

During a charity event in 1987, Princess Diana was famously captured wearing the necklace while accessorising an Elizabethan-inspired purple Catherine Walker gown.

Former owner Ramsay Attallah, who received the necklace from her father, Persian collector Naim Attallah, placed it up for auction.

The jewellery was reportedly loaned to the People’s Princess several times during the 1980s by the older Attallah. Diana is the sole person who has worn it since Attallah purchased it from jeweller Garrard in the 1980s, according to Sotheby’s.

The owner of the dress, the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum, allowed Kardashian to borrow it. At the Met Gala, she barely wore the dress for a little over five minutes, yet there were reports that she ruined it.

Both Ripley and Kardashian refuted the reports that the dress was destroyed.
