The Department of Justice announced to pay $138.7 million as settlement to hundreds of victims of convicted USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar on Tuesday. The allegation were put on the FBI when they failed to investigate accusations of sexual misconduct and abuse.
On charges of sexual assault, a former physician with Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics is serving a 40 to 175-year prison. This settlement have it base from an April 2022 when 13 women and girls filed sexual assault report Nassar and during that time FBI failed to adequately investigate the allegations they made in 2015- one year before Nassar’s arrest.
The watchdog report found the FBI had already notified about Nassar’s behavior but do not took any action for more than 14 months, during which Nassar have abused at least 40 more girls and women.
Nassar was declared guilty in 2017 for child pornography and other charges for 60 years. He was again sentenced to 40 to 175 years prison charges in January 2018 regarding the same. These charges were followed by a 2016 IndyStar investigation into various cases of sexual assault.
