Alabama man sentenced to life in murder of pregnant woman

In TROUP COUNTY, Ga., an east Alabama man received a life sentence for the stabbing murder of a pregnant woman in LaGrange. Curteze Avery, 30, from Lafayette, pleaded guilty to the murder of Breanna Burgess, 26, from LaGrange in 2022. Burgess was 20 weeks pregnant when she was killed.

Avery was charged with malice murder and feticide on Oct. 6, 2022. Superior Court Judge Erica Tisinger sentenced Avery to two concurrent life sentences. The case was handled by Senior Assistant District Attorney David McLaughlin. The investigation, led by LaGrange Police Department Detective Charles Brown, revealed that Burgess was found dead early in the morning on July 27, 2022, near Fort Drive and Whitesville Road in LaGrange.

LaGrange Police Department followed cell phone records to a friend of Burgess who was with her just before the incident. This friend informed officers that the last time she saw Burgess, she was with Avery in a neon green Chevrolet Camaro.

Using traffic cameras in LaGrange, investigators traced the Camaro’s movements before and after the event. The vehicle was located at a residence in LaGrange a few hours post the incident, with blood discovered on the car’s exterior.

Subsequently, a search warrant was issued for both the car and the residence. Avery was then discovered hiding inside the house.
