According to his wife, he passed away on January 18 in Poughkeepsie, New York, from cancer.
La Farge was a native New Yorker whose stories and articles have been published in magazines like McSweeney’s, The Village Voice, and The New Yorker. His first book, The Artist of the Missing, came out in 1999 and is set in an unidentified modern metropolis where many people go missing. The main character of the novel creates portraits of the lost, such as his parents and brother who vanished when he was a child, as well as his romantic interest, a cop photographer when she too becomes one of the missing.
La Farge’s work is difficult to describe because of his experiments with style, timeframes, and narrative structure, as several assessments of his work have noted. Gary Shteyngart, a fellow author, a friend, and a fan wrote to the New York Times in an email describing the experience of reading La Farge’s work as being “gently lowered into a bath of right temperature, as ideas, revelations, and universes float by.” He also said that “His books are inhabited by some of the most real and conflicted and lost people to have walked through 21st-century prose.”
