Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has reassured the United States that the recent outbreak of Covid-19 in European nations is not a cause for alarm. Several countries in Europe have seen a significant increase in the number of cases of Covid-19’s BA.2 variant.
BA.2 variant could cause spike in cases
In the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and other European countries, the number of cases of Covid-19 BA.2 variant has increased dramatically. According to Dr. Murthy, it is almost inevitable that the variant will lead to an increase in cases in the United States that cannot be ignored. He stated that things are a lot better for the United States now than they were two years ago.
According to Yahoo! News, Dr. Murthy was asked if the recent positive tests of Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Irish Taoiseach Michael Martin indicated that the federal government in Washington DC was moving too swiftly away from Covid precautions. He said that people can’t move on but can move forward with confidence. They can live their lives without being defined by COVID.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, an infectious diseases expert, agreed with Dr. Murthy during an interview on ABC’s This Week on Sunday morning. Predicted a rise of Covid infections comparable to what has been seen across Europe even as hospitalizations and death rates have been decreasing in the US.
New variant cases continue to rise in the UK
As reported by the Office for National Statistics, the number of people infected with Covid in the UK is now approaching one out of every twenty people living there. Anyone over the age of 75 is affected, as they are due a spring booster jab to keep their immune systems strong.
According to BBC News, vaccines are still helping to prevent many severe cases, say specialists, despite the rise in hospitalizations as well. Omicron’s BA.2 variant is responsible for the vast majority of infections. The diminishing protection from immunizations and the recent relaxing of limitations could also be factored in the rise in the number of cases.
