US veterans are preparing to join Ukrainian troops fighting Russian forces. With a conventional and target-rich army, many soldiers are hungry for a righteous war to protect freedom against an autocratic enemy.
US veterans join the Ukraine military
Step-by-step directions on how to join the Ukrainian military have been published by a variety of mainstream media outlets, including Military Times and Time, as reported by the New York Times. This week, the Ukrainian government issued a call for volunteers to contact their consulates in order to join the effort.
Some of the veterans who have contacted the consulates this week claim that they are still waiting for a response and believe that the staff is overburdened with requests.
According to a video posted to Telegram on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that 16,000 people had signed up for the international brigade. However, the exact number is unknown at this time. The New York Times was unable to track down any former service members currently engaged in combat in Ukraine.
As per the report, US veterans said that prior experiences drive the outpouring of support. The profound clarity and purpose they felt in combat are often lacking in modern suburban life. Others joined the military to make up for failed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to defend democracy against a totalitarian invader.
Volunteers are encouraged to join Ukraine against Russian forces
According to MSN, Ukraine’s minister of international affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, reiterated this idea last week, urging volunteers to come to the country to fight Russia and bringing attention to the German occupation of the country during WWII.
Kuleba encourages foreigners, who are interested to join Ukraine, to get in touch with the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in their country, as he mentioned that Putin will be defeated by this alliance.
Last week, President Joe Biden announced two rounds of sanctions against Russia, including a SWIFT embargo on selected Russian banks. The sanctions have already had a tremendous impact on the Russian economy, with the currency plunging and billions of dollars frozen.
